Region 9 Director

James C. Lakeman

Jimmy Lakeman was elected Director of UAW Region 9 by the Constitutional Delegates of Region 9 in a Special Election on January 15, 2026.

Prior to his election as Director, Lakeman was an International Servicing Representative in Region 9 since 2010. While on Staff, Jimmy serviced a diverse variety of local unions across many sectors including Auto, IPS, Higher Ed., and Legal Aid. He also negotiated first time agreements at DKP Buffalo (UAW Local 55), Philadelphia Defenders (UAW Local 5502), and the Western New York Law Center (UAW Local 55). 

Besides servicing locals within the Region, Lakeman has worked with other departments including CAP, Organizing, and Strategic Bargaining. Lakeman was one of the main drivers behind the passage of legislation granting Unemployment Insurance Benefits for striking workers in New York State. 

Along with his UAW responsibilities, Jimmy holds Vice President positions in both the Western New York Area Labor Federation and the Buffalo Central Labor Council. He was the 2023 recipient of the WNY Area Labor Federation Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award. Lakeman also served on the transition team for newest City of Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan. 

Lakeman started his career in the UAW as Summer Help (D2) at GM Tonawanda Forge in May of 1993. He was the second generation at the Forge, following in the footsteps of his father, James. Upon its sale to American Axle in March of 1994, Lakeman gained seniority with UAW Local 846 where he went on to serve a one term as Chair of Trustees, two terms as Vice President, and two terms as President. He also completed the UAW Fellowship Program in September of 1998 and served as Co-Chair of the 2008 AAM National Negotiation Committee. He is currently a member of UAW Local 686. 

Born and raised in the City of Buffalo, Jimmy is active in his community, serving as a coach for youth baseball and basketball, serving on the WNY CF Foundation, sitting on the Board of Rooted in Love, and as a lifetime member of the NAACP. 

Lakeman resides in Williamsville, NY, with his wife Liz and their children Amelia and Jack.
