Colleagues,

We met with Library Management today May 7th, from 9am-5pm at the Library.

Management Representatives: Emerson Demeester-Lane (Director), Kathy Weinberg (Library Board of Trustees)

Association Representatives: Mitchell Hall, Katylyn Hulbert, Sam MacQueen, Shelby Buche, John Tavares (Local 2300 President), Chauncey Bennett (Local 2300 1st Vice President), Lonnie Everett (Region 9 Servicing Representative)

After much discussion, we successfully passed language in regard to adopting Artificial Intelligence and automation in such a way that does not unduly affect staff members' employment, wages, or benefits. We adopted the Oxford English Dictionary's definition of AI and agreed to refer to the ALA's draft (to be adopted June 2026) of "Guidance on the use of Artificial Intelligence in Libraries." Accord was reached in the considerations the library must give to staff in advance of AI implementation, including notice and appropriate training at the library's expense if job functions are impacted, and review by labor and management of ongoing AI applications on an annual basis. Additionally, it was agreed that AI shall not serve as the sole basis for employee discipline, termination, or performance evaluation.

Agreement was reached on the wage increase for SSA positions retroactive for 2025 and set for 2026 and 2027.  Discussion is ongoing regarding the annual living wage assessments, and the ratification stipend.

The proposal pertaining to the employee's right to due process in the event of disciplinary action was reviewed and will be discussed in one pf the two scheduled upcoming bargaining sessions.

Our next two bargaining sessions are scheduled for 1-5pm tomorrow, and 9-5 on wed 5/13.  Optimistically, the contract should be completed at the end of the 13th.

Information on the remaining proposals will be distributed to SSA members, and we will have time for discussion at our meeting next Tuesday.

In Solidarity,
